Brother Chittock and the London Blitz

On Monday night Brother Chittock (the man from our stake who took us on the walk) came and spoke to us about his experience during the London Blitz.  He spent about an hour telling us about the conditions he lived in, the rationing, etc.  Something I learned was that, even though kids (like on the Chronicles of Narnia and Bedknobs and Broomsticks) were evacuated to the country, they were evacuated quite awhile before any bombing actually took place.  Because nothing happened for so long, a lot of the families actually had their kids return home, and they were at home in London during the Blitz.  Anyway, so Bro. Chittock was home with his parents and little brothers (I think he was around 5 or 6 when it started?) during this whole time, and I guess they had these shelters (that really didn't protect against the bombs but against the fallout (I hope that's the right word)) that they would sit in for days and days on end during the bombing (which was signaled by church bells), that would fill up with water partways when it rained, and were just basically miserable.  It was really interesting hearing about it, especially from a first hand view.  Once again, like after going to the Imperial War Museum, I am SO grateful for this time and safety that I live in.
